Smart and Skilled Fee-Free Scholarships

The NSW Government's Smart and Skilled Fee-Free Scholarships mean that students can get training to get the skills they need to get the job they want and their course fees will be covered.

Smart and Skilled Fee-Free Scholarships are available for:

  • young people who are eligible for a concession fee

  • young people who are or have been in out-of-home care

  • people who are experiencing or have experienced domestic and family violence and their dependents.

Are you eligible?

To be eligible for a Fee-Free Scholarship, you must:

  • be wanting to study a Smart and Skilled subsidised Certificate I, Certificate II, Certificate III or Certificate IV level qualification on the NSW Skills List, including those qualifications that support apprenticeships and traineeships.

  • meet the Smart and Skilled eligibility criteria


  • be aged between 15 and 30 years old when you start training; and

  • be either the recipient of a specific Australian Government welfare benefit or allowance or the dependent of such a recipient; or

  • be aged 15-17 years old and currently in out-of-home care or aged 18-30 years old and previously have been in out-of-home care


  • have a letter of recommendation from a domestic and family violence service, refuge or other support agency; and

  • be commencing training on or after 1 July 2016.

Eligible students are entitled to one Fee-Free Scholarship per financial year, and a maximum of two Fee-Free Scholarships from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2019.

Smart and Skilled Part Qualifications Program

Tamworth Community College is contracted by the NSW Department of Education to deliver business vocational training and development.  Training can be short term, in selected modules, conducted at your premises, quick to implement and developed for a specific job or task.

The Smart and Skilled Part Qualifications program focuses on training to assist people to upskill in their workplace, develop the skills that they need to get a job or undertake entry level qualifications.

Funding is available for vocational development and training which:

  • targets specific industries and equity groups

  • is available for jobseekers and existing workers

  • meets NSW economic priorities and strategies, eg skills shortage areas, green skills etc.

Tamworth Community College can recommend training designed to suit your business or individual goals.  Training can be offered in the form of Skill Sets; made up of one or more accredited units of competency from Certificate II to Diploma level.  This approach to training can be a great way to complete just the training that is relevant to you.

Smart and Skilled Tech Savvy Small Business Program

The Tech Savvy Small Business Program aims to support small business owners and their staff by providing fully subsidised accredited and non-accredited training in targeted courses in information technology, business services or foundation skills.
