Assist Clients with Medication

This course is suitable for community services and health workers with authority in their state or territory to assist with the administration of medication. You will learn the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication assistance and complete medication documentation. It also involves supporting a client's self-administering medication.

You will learn how to:

  • Read and understand basic medical terminology
  • Correctly store medication
  • Identify potential medication errors and the reasons why they most commonly occur
  • Read medication charts and ensure the medication being administered is a current order and in date
  • Prepare and assist with medication
  • Prepare the client for assistance with the administration of medication
  • Support clients with self-administration of medication
  • Handle medication contingencies
  • Complete medication distribution and documentation

Upon successful completion of assessment task(s) students will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for unit: HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication

 

 

Pre-requisites

Students must speak and understand English to safely assist clients with medication. They must also have sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to calculate and check the correct dosage of medication, expiry dates, and client information. This includes basic calculations of ratios and volume, as well as the ability to correctly check and interpret client information and dosage instructions.

 

Requirements

This course has no formal entry requirements; however, this is an accredited unit for existing workers in the aged care, health, individual support and community services industry.
